Visit the Château de Busseol, or the Spur of the Centuries
O you who climb this stony path, know that you are not approaching just another ruin, but a basaltic elder standing there for eleven hundred years—as motionless as remorse, as hard as the conscience of a repentant murderer. The volcanic dike upon which it rests was not chosen by chance: it has thrust up from the earth like a clenched fist since the dawn of time, and upon that fist, men of the twelfth century built a fortress as unshakeable as hatred itself. Beautiful as the chance encounter, on a dissecting table, between a Romanesque circular chimney and a lightning bolt.
Listen: beneath your feet lie more than ten thousand years of human occupation. Before the Counts of Auvergne, even before the legions of the Gallo-Roman *castrum*, other creatures—your ancestors, or perhaps your monstrous kin—had already chosen this crag as a refuge against the indifferent vastness of the Limagne, which stretches out below like a green shroud. The very name "Busséol," it is said, derives from the Latin *buteo*—the buzzard—that bird of prey which nests on the heights and gazes, with almost philosophical detachment, upon the smallness of the valleys.
Illustrious and formidable figures have cast their shadows upon the ramparts of this keep: Pope Alexander III may well have gazed upon it, and Catherine de' Medici stayed there with her son—the future Charles IX—in 1566, a queen and mother weaving intrigues within these walls whose echoes have never quite ceased to rumble. Marguerite de Valois—Queen Margot herself—walked these very flagstones.
And yet, O visitor, the castle never yielded: neither to the assaults of the Black Prince during the long agony of the Hundred Years' War, nor to the siege by Philip Augustus, nor to the fury of the Count of La Rochefoucauld and his Leaguers in 1589. Richelieu himself—that gravedigger of fortresses—looked away and spared it. It was not until the Revolution that the edifice finally suffered its first true wound.
Cross the threshold now and enter the great hall where a circular fireplace awaits—motionless for eight centuries—its hood rising like a petrified cry in stone; it is a unique piece in France, as rare as a scruple in a tyrant. Surrounding it, period furniture, weapons, and armor compose a scene where feudal life seems, for a moment, to hold its breath before resuming its silent march through the centuries.
But save the greatest marvel for last: climb the ramparts and discover—suspended high above, where no outside eye could ever guess its existence—a garden, the Garden of the Crusades. It is planted with Isfahan roses, Judas trees, and irises from Egypt—symbols plucked from distant lands and set down here, at an altitude of seven hundred meters, like a sublime yet humble offering to eternity.
From this promontory, your gaze will take in the Forez mountains and the Sancy massif, and you will perhaps understand why men build castles on crags: not to defend themselves against the world, but to look down upon it with the quiet melancholy of those who know that even stone will one day return to dust.
Thus may Busséol be visited—an eagle’s nest, a fist of lava, and a secret garden at the summit of vertigo.
Here, this spectacle awaits you, ready to surprise you and to find inspiration.

Busseol Castle
Busséol Castle was built in 1170 on the still visible remains of a 2nd-century Gallo-Roman castrum, on a volcanic dike overlooking the Limagne plain, at an altitude of 700 meters. A rare example of Romanesque architecture, it has retained the military character that allowed it to withstand the siege by Philip Augustus in 1215, the assaults of the Black Prince's soldiers during the Hundred Years' War, and the attack by the Duke of La Rochefoucauld, leader of the Catholic League, in 1595. From its origins, this fortified castle belonged successively to illustrious figures: the Counts of Auvergne, Pope Alexander III, John Stuart, Prince of Scotland, Blanche of Clermont, granddaughter of Saint Louis, and others. It became part of the royal domain through Catherine de Medici, Queen of France and Countess of Auvergne, who stayed there with her son Charles IX in 1566 during their trip to Auvergne. It is thus considered the most historic castle in the province. Spared by Richelieu, it remained inhabited until the French Revolution.
In the great hall, one can admire an exceptional 12th-century circular fireplace, period furniture, and weapons and armor evoking feudal life. From the ramparts, one discovers a stunning hanging garden and a magnificent panorama stretching from the Monts du Forez to the Massif du Sancy.
