Visit to the Park-Museum and Montbard Castle: In the Footsteps of Buffon, Between Nature and History
Upon entering the gates of the Montbard Park-Museum , visitors are struck by a sense of stepping back in time, as if the pages of a book by Buffon himself were coming to life before their eyes. Here, nature and science blend harmoniously, offering an experience where every step is a discovery, every glance a lesson. The estate, once a place of study and contemplation for the great naturalist Georges-Louis Leclerc, Count of Buffon , retains the spirit of curiosity and wonder that animated this 18th-century genius. The Park-Museum , spanning several hectares, is a verdant haven where biodiversity flourishes with rare generosity. The shaded paths, lined with centuries-old trees, invite leisurely strolls. Here, majestic stags , elegant fallow deer , and a diverse birdlife roam semi-freely in a protected environment. The ponds, teeming with carp and ducks, reflect the ever-changing Burgundy sky, while the formal French gardens , with their geometric flowerbeds, evoke the order and rigor so dear to Buffon. Each species, each plant, seems to have been carefully chosen to illustrate the richness of life, like a living encyclopedia. At the heart of the park, the Buffon Museum , housed in the former 18th-century Great Forge , immerses visitors in the naturalist's intellectual world. The collections, rich in minerals, fossils, skeletons, and herbaria , bear witness to his tireless quest to understand the mysteries of nature. Visitors can admire mammoth skeletons , exotic seashells , and period scientific instruments , all displayed in a way that makes science accessible and captivating. The showcases, explanatory panels, and reconstructions of extinct animals offer a journey through the ages, from the Earth's earliest days to the evolution of species. The visit continues to the Château de Montbard , the historic residence of the Dukes of Burgundy and later the Lords of Montbard . This castle, with its imposing towers and walls of golden stone , overlooks the town and the Brenne Valley. Its elegantly furnished rooms tell the story of the region, from the Middle Ages to the time of Buffon, who lived and worked there. The Guards' Room , the castle chapel , and the private apartments are all places steeped in history, where one can easily imagine the scholarly discussions and lavish receptions of yesteryear. From the ramparts , the view over the Burgundy countryside is breathtaking, offering a panorama where forests, meadows, and the meandering river intertwine. The route ends with the terraced gardens , inspired by Buffon's work on agronomy and botany. Here, medicinal plants grow alongside fruit trees, and the historic greenhouses house rare species collected over the centuries. A stroll through these gardens is an invitation to reflect on the harmony between humankind and nature, a theme dear to the naturalist philosopher.

Montbard Castle - Buffon Park
Buffon Park is built in terraces on the remains of Montbard Castle: two towers and the ramparts are reminders of this residence of the Dukes of Burgundy. Beneath the leafy canopy lies the study where Buffon composed his Natural History. The former stables, opposite the park gates, house the Buffon Museum.
