A Unique Historical and Natural Site:

Freÿr Castle and its Renaissance gardens, redesigned in 1760 by Canon Provost Guillaume de Beaufort-Spontin in the classical style, invite meditation and contemplation. The enchanting atmosphere of this place unfolds beneath the shade of the linden trees arranged in a quincunx, accompanied by the sound of fountains and the fragrance of orange trees, some of the oldest of their kind in Europe, many of which originated in the Lorraine court. These orange trees are protected during the winter in the oldest orangeries in the Netherlands.

From 1770 onwards, the garden was enlarged by Philippe, younger brother of Guillaume, who designed a second axis perpendicular to the river, running along the banks of the Meuse and culminating at the Frédéric Salle , a small rococo belvedere of great beauty, a true masterpiece of the refined stucco work of the Moretti family.

The gardens, inspired by master gardener Le Nôtre , are largely composed of hornbeam labyrinths that extend over 6 km, creating intimate and fascinating walks.

The site invites you on a stroll through time and nature. The intimate gardens , the harmonious layout of the flowerbeds , and the peaceful atmosphere emanating from this monumental ensemble, with its wild and unspoiled setting, offer a true moment of serenity. The spectacular view of the Meuse River and the neighboring rocks completes this enchanting scene.

The History of the Castle:

Since its destruction by the Duke of Nevers in 1554, the Château de Freÿr was rebuilt as a Renaissance manor house, before being enlarged in the early 17th century to become a quadrangle with an inner courtyard. From the 18th century onwards, renovations transformed the château into the summer residence of the Beaufort-Spontin family, while the gardens were redesigned to create one of the most beautiful landscaped ensembles in the region.

Still inhabited and managed by a non-profit organization, this magical place continues to captivate visitors with its architecture, gardens and the history it holds.
