Montmorin Castle – Visit to the historical site

A must-see site in Billom, what to see, what to do in Montmorin:

Located 5 km southeast of Billom, this imposing fortress is the ancestral home of the powerful Montmorin family. Dating from the 12th and 13th centuries, it forms a major defensive complex, the outermost wall of which is currently being restored.

One of the castle's highlights is its fortified gate , flanked by two towers and topped with machicolations—a true architectural masterpiece. In the left tower, you can see a watchtower with its fireplace, adding to the site's authenticity. The guardhouse , built against the curtain wall, is open to visitors and houses a rich collection of weapons and furniture dating from the 13th to the 18th centuries, displayed in four rooms. The common room reflects daily life in the Auvergne region during the medieval period.

The archaeological excavations carried out on the site are also highlighted, offering a fascinating glimpse into local history. Finally, from the rampart walk , you will enjoy an exceptional panoramic view of the Limagne plain and the Chaîne des Puys mountain range.

The castle is listed as a Historical Monument, a testament to the richness of its heritage.
