Montmorin Castle

Perched on a hill 5 km southeast of Billom, this fortress is the ancestral home of the powerful Montmorin family. An important defensive complex dating from the 12th and 13th centuries, its outermost enclosure is currently being restored.
The fortified gate, flanked by two towers and surmounted by machicolations, is particularly noteworthy. In the left tower, the watchtower with its fireplace is a striking feature. The guardhouse, built against the curtain wall, is open to visitors. It houses, in four rooms, rich collections of weapons and furniture from the 13th to the 18th centuries. The common room offers a glimpse into life in the Auvergne region. The results of archaeological excavations carried out on the site are also on display. From the ramparts, there is a sweeping panorama of the Limagne plain and the Chaîne des Puys mountain range.
