Visit Busseol Castle, OR THE SPUR OF THE CENTURIES

O you who climb this stone path, know that you are not approaching just another ruin, but an ancient basalt figure, planted there for eleven hundred years, as still as remorse, as hard as the conscience of a repentant murderer. The volcanic dike upon which it rests was not chosen by chance: it sprang from the earth like a clenched fist since the dawn of time, and upon this fist, men of the twelfth century built a fortress as unshakeable as hatred itself. Beautiful as the chance encounter, on a dissecting table, of a Romanesque circular chimney and lightning.

Listen: beneath your feet lie more than ten thousand years of human occupation. Before the Counts of Auvergne , even before the legions of the Gallo-Roman castrum, other creatures—your ancestors, or perhaps your monstrous kin—had already chosen this rock as a refuge from the indifferent immensity of the Limagne plain, which stretches out below like a green shroud. The very name Busséol, it is said, comes from the Latin *buteo *, the buzzard—that bird of prey that nests on the heights and contemplates, with an almost philosophical detachment, the smallness of the valleys.

This keep has witnessed illustrious and terrible figures pass over its ramparts: Pope Alexander III may well have cast his gaze upon it, Catherine de Medici lodged here with her son, the future Charles IX, in 1566—queen and mother, weaving intrigues within these walls whose echoes have never quite ceased to rumble. Marguerite de Valois , Queen Margot herself, trod these flagstones.

And yet, O visitor, the castle never yielded: neither to the assaults of the Black Prince during the long agony of the Hundred Years' War, nor to the siege by Philip Augustus , nor to the fury of the Count of La Rochefoucauld and his Leaguers in 1589. Richelieu himself, that destroyer of fortresses, averted his eyes and spared it. It was not until the Revolution that the edifice finally suffered its first real wound.

Cross the threshold now and enter the great hall where, motionless for eight centuries, a circular fireplace awaits you, its hood rising like a petrified stone cry—a unique piece in France, as rare as a tyrant's scruples. Around it, period furniture, weapons, and armor compose a tableau where feudal life seems, for a moment, to hold its breath before resuming its silent march through the centuries.

But save the greatest wonder for last: climb the rampart walk, and discover, suspended up there where no outside eye could guess it, a garden — the garden of the Crusades — planted with roses from Isfahan, trees from Judah, irises from Egypt, symbols torn from distant lands and deposited here, at seven hundred meters altitude, like a derisory and sublime offering to eternity.

From this promontory, your gaze will embrace the Forez mountains and the Sancy massif , and you will perhaps understand why men build castles on rocks: not to defend themselves from the world, but to look down on it, with the quiet melancholy of those who know that even stone, one day, will return to dust.
