Description
A must-see site in Gordes. What to see and do at and under the Saint-Firmin Palace
The Cellars of the Saint-Firmin Palace offer a unique experience through a sensory tour that, thanks to sound and light displays, brings to life the power and beauty of this mysterious space. Let yourself be transported by the impressions and sensations that surround you, while stimulating your imagination.
The cellars of the Palais Saint Firmin are located near the church and the Gordes viewpoint. Spread over seven levels and with a drop of nearly 20 meters, they form an extraordinary complex comprising some fifty underground spaces. Some are connected by corridors and staircases; others open directly to the surface. Here you'll find oil mills, cisterns, a magnificent bread oven , and various storage rooms: a testament to the village's former artisanal life. Beneath the Palais Saint Firmin, visitors can explore three levels of semi-troglodytic cellars, some built of dressed stone, others carved directly into the rock. These cellars, likely former quarries developed between the 11th and 18th centuries, also feature significant Romanesque structures. The interlocking upper levels and vaults allow for the identification of different periods. On the ground floor, the channels and vats are hewn directly into the rock . While humans lived above ground, industry and crafts developed underground . In Gordes, there exists a gigantic underground network, often more impressive than the houses that shelter it.
For younger children, an even more immersive adventure awaits: armed with caving headlamps, children can step into the shoes of real explorers to discover this fascinating place.
