Description
Villa Loupian - Gallo-Roman Site Museum
Site description:
The Gallo-Roman Site Museum of Villa Loupian offers an immersive experience in the history of Antiquity, through the remains of an exceptional Gallo-Roman villa. Located near the Via Domitia , an ancient road linking Italy to Spain, the villa was inhabited for over six centuries, from the end of the 1st century BC to the 6th century AD.
Excavations carried out over more than 30 years have revealed the evolution of this agricultural site, which over the centuries became a large patrician villa, complete with baths and a port. Viticulture played a central role, and pottery workshops produced amphorae for transporting wine.
At the end of Antiquity, the villa was transformed into a veritable small palace, with a floor adorned with polychrome mosaics. These mosaics are one of the highlights of the visit, representing an exceptional blend of cultural influences ranging from Aquitaine to Syria.
The museum presents these mosaics in their original context, with a 1000 m² building dedicated to their protection and display. Visitors can walk along walkways offering a panoramic view of the ancient residence. A reception area explains the site's history, its economic role, and its organization as an agricultural estate.
This museum, unique in France, allows visitors to discover the importance of the Gallo-Roman villa and to appreciate the craftsmanship and lifestyles of the time.
