What to see and do at Magrin Castle?

Rich in captivating history, it combines medieval and Renaissance architectural elements. During your visit, you will discover:

  • The 16th-century Renaissance façade : This building, with Renaissance characteristics, was the place where the future Henry IV took refuge in 1585, an important episode in his history.

  • General view of the Renaissance and medieval sections : As you stroll through the grounds, you can admire the fusion of the medieval and Renaissance parts of the castle. In the foreground, you'll discover a flowering woad plant, adding a picturesque touch to the scene.

  • The animal-powered pastel mill : One of the most remarkable features of the castle is its pastel mill, a rare and unique device operating with animal traction, illustrating the traditional methods of producing pastel, an emblematic plant of the region.

  • The medieval western wing and the Renaissance pastel museum : This section of the castle, identifiable by its vertical, ventilated shutters, houses a drying room for woad.
