Pirou Castle

Pirou Castle

Pirou

Built in the 12th century on an artificial island surrounded by three moats and five fortified gates, Pirou, with its high ramparts, is the oldest of the Norman castles.
The ancient legend of the Geese of Pirou tells of the castle's inhabitants being transformed into geese in the face of Scandinavian attackers.
The castle has been under restoration since 1968.

Discover: the bakery, the wine press, the chapel, the Hall of Pleas with the Pirou Tapestry (on display in summer), the old living quarters, and the rampart walk with its beautiful slate roofs.
