Hattonchâtel est situé en Meuse, dans le Parc Naturel Régional de Lorraine entre Verdun et Metz, à côté de Vigneulles-lès-Hattonchâtel à quelques km du Lac de Madine.
Le Château d'Hattonchâtel, ancienne Seigneurie des Évêques de Verdun, date du IXe siècle.
Les ducs de Lorraine y séjournèrent, ainsi que de nombreuses personnalités, comme Monsieur de Calonne, Ministre de Louis XVI. Le château et ses terrasses se situent à 355 m d'altitude et à 80 m au dessus de la plaine de la Woëvre et du Lac de Madine. Le panorama est grandiose.
