Discover the fascinating history of Château Saint Hugues , a well-preserved historical monument that immerses you in the medieval and architectural past of the region.

Château Saint Hugues remarkably preserves its square Romanesque keep , dating from the 10th and 11th centuries, which rises to a height of 22 meters. The site also features two round defensive towers with their well-preserved arrow slits. A building constructed in 1780 houses former cells, adding a further historical dimension to the visit.

The visit will allow you to explore all the buildings of the castle and access a breathtaking view of the town, formerly a stronghold, as well as the valley below.

Nearby, don't miss the Romanesque collegiate church of Saint Hilaire , built in the 12th century, another remarkable example of the Romanesque styles of the Brionnais region and the Abbey of Cluny. Between the castle and the church, you can also see the former courthouse , dating from 1780.

Château Saint Hugues thus offers a complete immersion in the medieval and architectural history of the region, with splendid panoramas of the surrounding area.

Prices and visiting days:

Château Saint Hugues is open from March 1st to November 15th. Visiting hours are as follows:

  • From Monday to Saturday: from 10am to 12pm and from 2pm to 6pm.
  • Sundays and public holidays: from 2pm to 6pm.
  • From May 15th to September 15th: closing at 7pm.

Prices :

  • Self-guided tour: €3 per person. Free for children under 12.
  • Reduced rates: €2.5 with the PASS Route des Châteaux en Bourgogne du Sud , the Club Amis des Plus Beaux Villages de France card, or on presentation of the Guide du Routard .
  • Guided tour (groups, on request): €3 per person.
  • Guided tour of the castle, the Romanesque collegiate church and the village: €4 per person.

Situé stratégiquement à 400 mètres d'altitude, au coeur des bocages du Brionnais, le château fort Saint-Hugues (ISMH) est un modèle d'architecture militaire des Xe et XIIe siècles, résidente de la puissante famille des Seigneurs de Semur dont est issu Saint Hugues, Grand abbé de Cluny. Le château conserve un rare specimen de donjon roman, protégé au devant par deux tours rondes de défense abritant salles de gardes, "oubliette", cachots... Son âge millénaire en fait l'un des plus anciens de Bourgogne et le seul existant en Charolais-Brionnais.

Le château fait partie de l'ancienne forteresse de Semur-en-Brionnais, aujourd'hui inscrit parmi les plus beaux villages de France et les sites clunisiens. On peut y visiter de très belles églises romanes, le grenier à sel, la salle du chapitre ; faire le tour de l'ancien rempart et assister aux animations proposées tout au long de la saison : visites guidées, visites nocturnes aux flambeaux, après-midi jeux médiévaux...
