Description
The Château de Loubens immerses you in a rich history through several exceptional rooms, such as:

 • The South Entrance : Created in 1825, this room replaced the old stone staircase in the hexagonal south tower. Here you will find an unpolished Pyrenees marble slab, as well as a plan of the castle and a design for French-style gardens dating from 1799.
 • The guardroom : This room, lit by two large stained-glass windows, houses a large stone fireplace, a French-style ceiling, a 16th-century Flemish tapestry, and a replica of a 15th-century suit of armor.
 • The old kitchen : Here you will discover a fireplace mantel made by Jules with columns and enamel plaques, as well as "vegetable gardens" on each side of the window, where the ember fires were kept.
 • The Capitoul's office : In this room, the salon of Joseph-François de Gounon-Loubens houses a desk facing his official portrait, in the full robes of a Capitoul.
 • The library : Located on the first floor of the Northwest tower, this vaulted room houses a fresco by Victor de Gounon-Loubens and is the birthplace of Hugues de Loubens Verdalle in 1531.
 • Wallpapers : In the library anteroom, you can admire a Directoire wallpaper, classified as a Historical Monument, with motifs of caryatids, griffins and pineapples, as well as other 19th-century wallpapers displayed in the drawing room.

Loubens Castle

Loubens-Lauragais

The fortified castle was founded by the ancient Loubens family, originally from La Réole in the Gironde region. The knight Guillaume de Loubens departed for the First Crusade in 1096 alongside Raymond IV of Saint-Gilles, Count of Toulouse. During the Middle Ages, the history of Loubens became intertwined with that of the Cathar heresy: Dame Berbéguièra, wife of the Lord of Loubens, declared to the inquisitor Ferrier in 1243 that she had "often visited the Cathar perfecti in their houses." During the "golden age" of pastel production, Jacques de Loubens , a brilliant military leader and wealthy man, expanded the residence. His brother, Hugues de Verdalle , born in Loubens in 1531, became Grand Master of the Order of Malta in 1582, a Cardinal, and a Prince.
