Our history

A Norman castle nestled in lush greenery.
On the edge of the Lyons forest, in the heart of the Andelle Valley, the Château de Vascœuil (a listed historical monument) is a typical example of 12th-century Norman architecture. Originally a fortified house with military functions, it became a rural residence in the 15th century and a writer's home in the 19th century.

Since 1970, Vascœuil has been an Art and History Center, presenting major exhibitions by renowned artists every year from Easter to All Saints' Day.

In the main courtyard stands a remarkable 17th-century red-brick dovecote (also a listed historical monument) with its original timber frame and rotating ladder system.

The gardens feature sculptures by renowned artists and a Michelet Museum.

The English-style park and the French-style garden, restored according to its 1774 plan, invite visitors to stroll along the Crevon River, which flows through the estate. Vascœuil houses a collection of sculptures by major 20th-century artists such as Dalí, Braque, Erro, F. Léger, Vasarely, and Capron. An 18th-century outbuilding contains the only museum in France dedicated to the great historian Jules Michelet (1798–1874), who wrote a significant portion of his work in his study, restored at the top of the castle tower.
