Our history
Strategically located at an altitude of 400 meters, in the heart of the Brionnais countryside, the fortified castle of Saint-Hugues (listed as a Historic Monument) is a prime example of 10th and 12th-century military architecture. It was the residence of the powerful Lords of Semur, the family to which Saint Hugh, Abbot of Cluny, belonged. The castle preserves a rare example of a Romanesque keep, protected in front by two round defensive towers housing guardrooms, a dungeon, and other dungeons. Its thousand-year history makes it one of the oldest in Burgundy and the only one remaining in the Charolais-Brionnais region.
The castle is part of the ancient fortress of Semur-en-Brionnais, now listed among the most beautiful villages in France and a Cluniac site. Visitors can explore its beautiful Romanesque churches, the salt storehouse, and the chapter house. Take a walk around the old rampart and attend the activities offered throughout the season: guided tours, torchlit night tours, medieval games afternoons... Find out more!
