Château d'Allemagne-en-Provence

Originally built by the Castellane family , the castle is still inhabited today. The crenellated keep dates from the 12th century. At that time, it was flanked by five defensive towers, linked by a curtain wall and surrounded by a moat. Starting in 1495, François de Castellane added the elegant Renaissance wing and transformed the defensive keep into a residential castle. Inside, a remarkable spiral staircase connects the keep to the Renaissance wing. On the second floor, a magnificent monumental plasterwork fireplace from 1546, supported by two full-length statues, adorns one of the castle's state rooms. In 1586, the castle was the site of a famous battle in which the Baron d'Allemagne was victorious, though he did not survive his wounds. Visitors will be able to admire, both inside and outside, all the architectural details (French-style ceilings, mullioned windows, etc.) and discover the traces of the great centuries that have marked the history of the Château.
