Description :

The Château de Cognac , a historical monument dating from the 12th to the 16th century , stands majestically on the heights of the Charente river.

The future King Francis I was born here, at the Château de Cognac, in 1494.

At the time, the residence was a castle belonging to the royal House of Valois .

During the visit, you will explore:

  • The governor's residence , rebuilt in the 15th century by Jean de Valois , the grandfather of François I, who made it his main residence.
  • The Helmet Room , a state room dating from the 13th century, is adorned with the coat of arms of the Valois, the dynasty to which Francis I belonged, just above the fireplace.

Cognac Castle

Cognac

This 9th-century fortress is the birthplace of Francis I. Seized as national property during the French Revolution, the Château de Cognac was sold in 1796 to Baron Otard, mayor of Cognac and deputy for the Charente department.

Baron Otard acquired the monument for its vaulted cellars, built against the rock and the old city walls, and for its walls, over 3 meters thick, which provide ideal aging conditions for Cognac. Today, Cognac aged at the château still bears the Baron's name, and the former fortress has been largely repurposed for the production of this precious spirit.

Discover the world of Cognac, from distillation to aging. Visit the Otard Museum and the cellars with a tasting.
