Tours of the Chateau

decouvertes-chateaux-france Description

A must-see site in Jumilhac-le-Grand. What to see and do at Jumilhac Castle:

Jumilhac Castle invites you to discover its history and majesty through guided tours and self-guided walks. This medieval castle, enriched with Renaissance elements, offers a glimpse into the fascinating past of the Marquis de Jumilhac family, famous for their role as lieutenant-generals in the king's armies during the 17th and 18th centuries.

The Château de Jumilhac, dating from the 13th and 15th centuries, is distinguished by its unique architecture, combining medieval style with touches of the Renaissance. Its enchanting roofs, adorned with allegorical ridge tiles, give the castle a majestic appearance, while its Renaissance windows soften its defensive features such as the watchtowers, the rampart walk, or the keep.

The castle was long the residence of the Marquises of Jumilhac, and several of its rooms reflect the evolution of the nobility through the centuries. Highlights of the visit include:

  • The room with the mural frescoes, where the legend of Louise de Hautefort (the Spinner) was born. According to tradition, Louise was locked away by her jealous husband, Antoine II de Jumilhac, to the point of spending 30 years spinning wool without ever finishing.

  • The vaulted dining room, which traces the architectural and decorative evolution from the Middle Ages to the 18th century, with furniture and architectural elements that bear witness to this transition.

  • The grand salon, dominated by an exceptional carved wooden fireplace from the Louis XIII period. This fully paneled salon has retained its atmosphere of yesteryear, recalling the glory and power of the Jumilhac family.

As you stroll through the castle and its gardens, let yourself be immersed in the fascinating history of this iconic place, where legends, architecture and nobility intertwine.
