Pange Castle - Cultural Tours

A must-see site in Lorraine, near Metz, in Pange. What to see and do at the Château de Pange:

Description :

Built on the site of an old feudal castle on the borders of the Duchy of Lorraine, it has a rich history marked by influential figures.

In 1720, Leopold , Duke of Lorraine, installed Jean-Baptiste Thomas , Treasurer-General of Extraordinary War Expenses, there. Under his impetus, the construction of the current castle began, according to the plans of the architect JB Louis . In 1766, Duke Stanislas raised the land of Pange to the rank of marquisate.

The 3rd Marquis de Pange, Louis , distinguished himself alongside Lafayette in the American Revolutionary War, notably at the Battle of Yorktown . During the French Revolution, his service in the Catholic and Royal Army led to his death during the Second War in the Vendée in 1796. His brother François , also deeply affected by the Revolution, distinguished himself in the Legislative Assembly through his opposition to Brissot .

Jacques , the younger son, bought back the estate under the Directory after its confiscation in 1791 and rallied to the Empire. Grand Chamberlain to Napoleon, he received Empress Marie-Louise at Pange in 1812. His son, married to the daughter of Georges Mouton , Marshal of the Empire, continued to enhance the importance of the château.

In the 20th century , the younger brother of the 8th Marquis, Jean , became a pioneer of the early Free French. An aviator, he participated in the Leclerc epic and the war mission in Russia, within the Normandie-Niemen squadron, receiving the Red Star for his bravery.

Today, after four centuries of service to Lorraine and France, the tenth Marquis of Pange , Roland , has returned to his ancestral castle, after 40 years of absence from the family.

Come and discover this unique heritage and its fascinating history through a guided tour of the castle and its gardens.

Pange Castle

Pange

A prime example of 18th-century French style, the Château de Pange is part of an estate that forms a remarkable landscape.
Visitors are captivated by the contrast between the park and the meadow, which extends beyond the river bordering the château, itself enclosed by the hillside where the forest spreads.
The château is closed to the public until the end of 2026 for roof repairs.
