Vitré Castle
Exceptional Chateaus & Castles
Our history
Built around 1080 by the Baron of Vitré on a rocky promontory overlooking the Vilaine valley , the Château de Vitré was rebuilt in the 13th century according to a triangular plan still visible today.
A witness to Breton feudal history, the castle passed successively into the hands of the Laval family, then the La Trémoïlle family in the 15th and 16th centuries , through marriage.
This imposing medieval castle , located on the historical border between France and Brittany , now houses a museum dedicated to the history of the town of Vitré: decorative arts , antique furniture , a 19th-century cabinet of curiosities , and many other treasures to discover.
