Valprivas Castle
Exceptional Chateaus & Castles
Our history
The château, whose existence is documented as early as 935, embodies both the historical depth and artistic refinement of a noble residence that has stood the test of time. Dominating its landscape with elegance, it is organized around a magnificent Renaissance-style inner courtyard, enhanced by an Italianate loggia reminiscent of the grace of Tuscan palaces. This harmonious architectural setting is a rare example of Italian influence on 16th-century French architecture.
The castle's former chapel, intimate and peaceful, houses two remarkable works from the workshops of Peter Paul Rubens, master of Flemish Baroque. These paintings, rich in expression and color, lend the place an exceptional artistic dimension, rare in a private property.
The castle was also the residence of Antoine Verd du Verdier, a notable figure of the 16th century, the king's lieutenant for the Lyon region, as well as a writer and humanist poet. His presence illustrates the intellectual and literary vocation of the place, which is continued today by the establishment, starting in 1963, of a Cultural Center created by heritage enthusiasts.
Completely restored with care and respect for history, this castle is much more than a monument: it is a living place, focused on the transmission of arts, literature and memory.
