Our history
This imposing Gothic building, erected between the 12th and 14th centuries, stands majestically in the heart of a region steeped in history. It houses the tomb of Pope Clement V, famous for being the first French pope to reside in Avignon in 1314. His fate is closely linked to the upheavals of his time, particularly the tensions between Philip the Fair and the Roman papacy.
A place of memory and spiritual power, the collegiate church also bears the mark of tragic events that shook the medieval world: the brutal suppression of the Knights Templar and the famous curse uttered by Jacques de Molay, the last Grand Master of the Templars, against the king and the pope. This context lends the building a mysterious atmosphere, where religious grandeur and political intrigue intertwine.
With its refined Gothic architecture, soaring vaults, sculpted capitals, and enigmatic history, the collegiate church is much more than a monument: it stands as a silent witness to the tensions between earthly kingdoms and spiritual powers. A visit is essential for anyone wishing to experience the depth of the French Middle Ages.
