Our history
Aragon and Elsa Triolet purchased the Villeneuve mill in 1951. The visible buildings date from the 18th and 19th centuries, but the watermill on the Rémarde River is much older, dating back to the 12th century. It is thanks to Louis Aragon and Elsa Triolet that the mill has been brought back to life. The Villeneuve mill was bequeathed to France by Aragon.
Today, it fulfills a threefold purpose, implemented by the Board of Directors of the "Elsa Triolet-Louis Aragon Research and Creation Center": a place of remembrance, with the apartment-museum and the tomb of the two writers; a center for scientific research, centered around its library of 30,000 volumes; and a place to support emerging artistic talent, in accordance with Aragon's explicit wishes. Numerous cultural events (exhibitions, performances, debates) take place there throughout the year. Program available upon request.
