Exceptional Chateaus & Castles

Our history

Toulouse, nicknamed the "Pink City" because of the warm color of its terracotta bricks, experienced its golden age between 1450 and 1600, a period of exceptional prosperity linked to the flourishing trade in woad. This dye plant, from which a precious blue pigment is extracted, brought wealth to the region, transforming Toulouse into a major economic and artistic center of the Renaissance.

Thanks to this prosperity, many bourgeois families and wealthy merchants built sumptuous private mansions in refined Renaissance styles, adorned with sculpted facades, mullioned windows, and elegant courtyards. These residences still bear witness to the city's past splendor and can be visited to discover the art of living during that era.

In the heart of Toulouse, the majestic Capitole is the city's historical and political symbol. Its imposing façade, with its harmonious proportions, adorned with Corinthian columns and arcades, houses the city hall as well as the Capitole Theatre, renowned for its operas and ballets. The Place du Capitole is a lively gathering place, where history, culture, and the daily lives of Toulouse residents intertwine.

This golden age of pastel profoundly marked the identity of Toulouse, making the city a true jewel of the French Renaissance, to be discovered through its cobbled streets, museums and iconic monuments.
