Taillis Castle

In the shade of the Trait-Maulévrier forest, the Château du Taillis was built at the beginning of the 16th century on the foundations of a 13th-century fortified house, of which a superb vaulted cellar still remains. Four 18th-century salons, arranged in a suite, include a theater, a Chinese salon, and the crystal and porcelain salon. The central section of the château, in the style of the Italian Second Renaissance , is the only example in Seine-Maritime of this very distinctive architecture; it is decorated with Doric pilasters on the ground floor and Ionic pilasters on the first floor. Within its 16th-century walls, the park shelters three-hundred-year-old trees (giant sequoia, araucaria, tulip tree, Atlas cedar, purple beech, etc.) as well as remarkable outbuildings (stables, barn, greenhouse, etc.) and notably an orangery whose architectural style is that of a Greco-Roman temple.
