Saint-Savin Abbey

A major monument of Poitou-Charentes, the Abbey of Saint-Savin stands proudly on the banks of the Gartempe, southeast of Vienne. Founded at the end of the 11th century, its abbey church houses an exceptional treasure : the largest collection of Romanesque mural paintings still preserved.

The nave, porch, gallery, choir, and crypt are magnificently adorned with frescoes depicting biblical stories, all in a remarkable state of preservation. This unique ensemble earned the abbey a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983.
