Saint-Martin du Canigou Abbey
Exceptional Chateaus & Castles
Our history
The Abbey of Saint-Martin du Canigou, nestled in the wild mountains, is a remarkable example of pre-Romanesque and early Romanesque architecture. It was built by Guilfred, Count of Cerdagne, who retired there in 1305. The pink marble capitals of the cloister date from the 12th and 13th centuries and depict secular scenes: animals, human dances, punishments... The church, in its verdant setting, offers visitors a moment of reflection, a bit of peace and quiet.
