Our history
Near the village of Maureillas lies a modest pre-Romanesque chapel built by a group of Benedictine monks from Arles-sur-Tech. The centuries have erased almost all the 12th-century frescoes that once adorned the side walls. However, those in the chancel still remain, depicting the Annunciation, the Nativity, and the Journey of the Magi (the Annunciation to the Shepherds was originally on the far right of the wall; only one angel remains). Above this scene, inscribed within a mandorla, is Christ in Majesty, giving his blessing; on the back wall, in a lozenge framed by two angels, appears the face of Mary. Specialists attribute these painted decorations to a talented painter whom they have dubbed the "Master of Fenollar," like those in the church of La Cluse-Haute (near Fenollar) and those in the priory of Marcevol (near Vinça).
