Roquetaillade Castle

Classified as a Historical Monument in 1840, the Château de Roquetaillade is unique, housing two fortified castles within a single enclosure. The first, erected by Charlemagne, dates from the 8th century. The second was built by the family of Pope Cement V in 1306. A witness to eight centuries of history, it embodies both medieval military power and aristocratic elegance. This perfect example of a medieval fortress is now considered one of the most beautiful in France. Behind its austere facades, one can admire the first monumental Renaissance fireplaces in Bordeaux, as well as the remarkable work of Viollet-le-Duc, the Leonardo da Vinci of the 19th century. In a unique style, his creations are adorned with vibrant colors, exuberant patterns, and animals—an ode to nature that foreshadows the Art Nouveau of Gaudí, Guimard, Horta, and others. A veritable movie set, it has hosted Roger Moore, Vanessa Redgrave, Patrick Macnee, Mark Dacascos, and more. Roquetaillade is also one of the few châteaux in France still inhabited by the same family for over 700 years, and one of the oldest vineyards in Bordeaux. Open to visitors, this major heritage site offers a fascinating glimpse into life at the château: richly decorated rooms, furniture and family heirlooms dating back to the Middle Ages, a kitchen with copper plates, a chapel with Moorish decorations, and more.
