Chateau Les Rochers-Sévigné
Exceptional Chateaus & Castles
Our history
A small castle defended by corner towers and moats, perched on a rocky hillside, the Château des Rochers-Sévigné was Marie de Sévigné's favorite Breton residence. Flamboyant Gothic in style, with its verticality, this 15th-century manor house boasts an elegant chapel built on an octagonal plan symbolizing the celestial realm. It is covered by a ship's hull roof with a lantern-shaped bell tower. The castle museum now allows visitors to admire the Green Room and its fireplace adorned with painted initials.
The garden, created in 1689 by Charles, the Marquise's son, and restored in 1982 according to its original plan, is one of the rare examples of a late 17th-century French garden. Beyond the garden gates, the park has retained the paths to which Mme de Sévigné had given names in the style of the précieuses: "the Infinite", "my mother's Mood", "my daughter's Mood", "the Solitary", "the Holy Horror", "the Cloister"...
