Our history
The city of Niort originated in Roman times, at a ford across the Sèvre River. It developed during the Middle Ages, at the foot of the castle of the Counts of Poitou. In the 12th century, a port was established on the river, trading the region's wines with Northern Europe and England. The city became an important strategic crossroads, defended by an imposing fortress, of which only the main tower remains today.
