Nieul Castle
Exceptional Chateaus & Castles
Our history
This fortified castle was built at the end of the 14th century by Jean Chaudrier, a direct vassal of the King of France. Pierre de Ronsard was a direct descendant of Jehan Chaudrier, who built the castle in 1372, and some writings attest to the presence of Bernard Palissy. Acquired in 1972 by its current owners in a state of advanced ruin, the castle was listed as a supplementary historical monument in 1988.
Its irregular hexagonal enclosure, surrounded by a dry moat, is punctuated by three stair towers leading to the upper floors. One is perfectly preserved, another partially restored, and the third, which survives only in its underground section, leads to some very beautiful vaulted rooms.
The simply furnished living quarters complete the medieval atmosphere for visitors, with their 16th-century furniture and paintings. Each year, the castle hosts theatrical performances and concerts.
Guided tours every day from 2:30pm to 6:30pm from mid-July to the end of August by appointment.
