Navarrenx

Navarrenx emerged as a medieval bastide as early as the 13th century. However, it was in the mid-16th century, in 1542, that the town truly flourished, when the King of Navarre decided to transform it into a cutting-edge stronghold. He entrusted the Italian architect Fabrici Siciliano with the task of erecting a bastioned wall inspired by the latest military techniques of the Italian Renaissance.

This defensive architecture, revolutionary at the time, transformed Navarrenx into one of the very first bastioned fortified towns in France. Solid and well-designed, the citadel victoriously withstood all assaults, asserting its strategic role as the gateway to Béarn.

Today, the town proudly preserves its ramparts, fortified gates, powder magazine, and barracks, all testaments to a glorious military past. Classified as one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France, Navarrenx appeals to history buffs as well as those who appreciate heritage and unspoiled landscapes.
