National Maritime Museum
Exceptional Chateaus & Castles
Our history
The National Maritime Museum is housed in the private mansion that still bears the name of the last lord of Rochefort, Henri de Cheusses. It is one of the two oldest buildings in the city. From 1690 to 1927, it successively served as the residence of the Naval Commander, the Intendant, and the Naval Commissioner. Classified as a historical monument in 1932, it was chosen to house the Arsenal's collections of models and sculptures. This first naval museum opened its doors in 1936. Closed in 1940 and taken over by various administrative offices, it was renovated and reopened to the public in 1974. It has been owned by the National Maritime Museum since 1978.
It strives to share the richness of maritime culture with everyone and sparks the imagination of travel and adventure.
