Dupuy-Mestreau Regional Museum
Exceptional Chateaus & Castles
Our history
Built in 1738 for Marquis Antoine Guinot de Monconseil, this elegant private mansion is a remarkable example of 18th-century civil architecture. From 1790 to 1810, it housed the prefecture of Charente-Inférieure before being transformed into a museum in 1920.
The museum presents the rich collections assembled by Abel Mestreau (1855-1939) at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Signs, earthenware, engravings, paintings, jewelry, traditional costumes, headdresses, weapons and reconstructions of peasant interiors bear witness to the regional heritage.
Displayed according to the museographic principles of the early 20th century, these pieces offer a unique immersion into the daily life of yesteryear in Saintonge.
