Our history

The Étienne Terrus Museum , located in Elne, pays tribute to this Catalan painter (1857–1922), a close friend of Matisse, Derain, Marquet, Camoin, and Luce , whom he welcomed into his local studio. Recognized as an undisputed master of watercolor , Étienne Terrus is distinguished by a personal style, independent of any school or movement, although the influence of the Fauves is clearly perceptible in his later canvases.

The ground floor of the museum is entirely dedicated to Terrus and some of his artist friends . The upper floors display works by contemporary painters who stayed in Elne, while an adjoining room regularly hosts temporary exhibitions .

An essential place to discover the world of a free artist, rooted in the light and landscapes of Roussillon.
