Jean-Jacques Rousseau Museum

In April 1756, Jean-Jacques Rousseau fled Paris, "a city of noise, smoke, and mud," and settled in Montmorency, at a place called "l'Ermitage." In December 1757, the Citizen of Geneva moved to the small Mont-Louis, now the Jean-Jacques Rousseau Museum. There he composed his major works: Julie, or the New Heloise ; Letter on the Spectacles ; The Social Contract ; and Emile, or On Education . The condemnation of Emile prompted the philosopher's flight on June 9, 1762.

The Museum invites you to discover, through a guided tour, the environment in which the writer lived, including his bedroom containing the furniture that belonged to Madame d'Épinay at the Hermitage, as well as his study. But also...

• Come and enjoy the Museum garden where you can benefit from an audio guide (adult and child route).
• From April to October, visit the temporary exhibitions independently or on a guided tour.
• Take a break at the tea room open in the garden several Sundays a month during peak season.
• (Re)read the philosopher's key works by purchasing them at the Museum shop.

Temporary exhibitions are held in a 19th ^- century extension of the house. They offer insights into the life and work of Rousseau, as well as the ^18th century and local history. Since 2022, a contemporary art exhibition has enriched the experience during the warmer months. The neighboring Maison des Commères houses the Museum's administration and the Rousseau Studies Library, which is open to the public by appointment.

A significant educational activity is offered to classes and leisure centers, from kindergarten to high school (workshops and guided tours).
