Our history
The Moullins estate is over 1000 years old.
The Moullins estate was already described as a villa during the Carolingian era. It was given by Hugh II, Count of Maine, to the Abbey of La Couture in Le Mans, by a charter dated between 968 and 989. The estate subsequently housed:
A priory conventual from around 990 until the second half of the 13th century, with 10 choir monks and a prior, representing a community of 50 to 60 people, some of whom returned to Le Mans around 1180;
A palatial residence of the abbots of La Couture, built around 1300-1320, of which the aula remains, the last large medieval reception hall with a basilica plan still standing in France;
A new residence with an abbot's residence, a dovecote tower, and a chapel. Classical Gothic, Roayon, and Flamboyant styles blend harmoniously.
Outbuildings dating from the 17th century were decorated with provocative paintings by two German prisoners in 1946-47.
All the buildings can be visited inside and out almost year-round by appointment and at set times in July, August, and September.
