Château des Milandes
Exceptional Chateaus & Castles
Our history
Built in the 15th century under the orders of François de Caumont, Lord of Castelnaud, the Château des Milandes was purchased in 1900 by a wealthy industrialist, Charles Claverie, who, strongly inspired by the Neo-Gothic architectural movement of Viollet-le-Duc, gave it its current appearance.
In 1938, Josephine Baker moved to the château: she created her "Village of the World" there and adopted 12 children of different religions and nationalities. Today, the château is entirely dedicated to this illustrious resident, who was inducted into the Panthéon in 2021. The sumptuous restored gardens and their fountains offer visitors a peaceful stroll. The chapel, restored and opened in 2023, is a Renaissance gem with its early 16th-century murals. A birds of prey demonstration from April to October immerses visitors in the art of falconry. There is also a brasserie on site. Numerous activities for the whole family during the holidays. The site is closed in January.
