Château de Médan - Maison Maeterlinck
Exceptional Chateaus & Castles
Our history
This former hunting lodge was built at the end of the 15th century on very ancient foundations dating back to the 9th century. From the Renaissance onward, the spirit of literature flourished on these banks of the Seine. The château was frequented by Ronsard and the poets of the Pléiade. Three centuries later, the site captivated and inspired the painter Paul Cézanne.
In 1924, Maurice Maeterlinck, Nobel Prize laureate in Literature, made it his new home. He wrote "The Life of the Termites" and "The Glass Spider" there, and staged "The Blue Bird" within its walls.
Left abandoned since the war, the château became the printing plant for the newspaper "Combat" in 1966, until the famous "Silence, we're sinking" article of August 30, 1974.
Sold at public auction in 1977, then restored over ten years by its current owners, the Château de Médan, now furnished and inhabited, has regained its 15th-century appearance.
