Stéphane Mallarmé's House
Exceptional Chateaus & Castles
Our history
Located near the Valvins bridge, on the banks of the Seine and facing the Fontainebleau forest , the museum is housed in the home where Mallarmé stayed very regularly from 1874 onwards, and then almost permanently after his retirement. He died there in 1898. Acquired by the Seine-et-Marne General Council in 1985, this house, which the poet said he had "adopted" as if it were his native land, underwent a complete restoration in preparation for its opening to the public in 1992. Today's visitors discover the familiar setting of the Mallarmé family, recreated as faithfully as possible, and the renovated garden, while on the museum's ground floor, temporary exhibitions focus more directly on the man, his work, and his era.
