Pierre Loti's House
Exceptional Chateaus & Castles
Our history
A writer's house, unique and enchanting, Pierre Loti's home is certainly the most exotic and original of late 19th-century residences. Julien Viaud, alias Pierre Loti, was born there on January 14, 1850, into a Protestant family with many sailors.
A naval officer himself, a member of the French Academy, and a celebrated writer, the author of Aziyadé and An Iceland Fisherman gradually transformed the family home with decorations he created upon returning from his voyages: the mosque, the Turkish salon, and the Arab bedroom coexist with a Renaissance room and a Gothic room, offering visitors a journey through time and into Pierre Loti's idealized Orient.
