Our history
The history of the Château de Maintenon dates back to the Middle Ages, as evidenced by its 12th-century square tower. On December 27, 1674, Françoise d'Aubigné, widow of the poet Scarron and future Marquise de Maintenon, purchased the estate. She enlarged and embellished the château and the park before becoming the secret wife of Louis XIV in 1684. The design of the parterres and the layout of the two park avenues are attributed to Le Nôtre.
