Saint-Martin Abbey of Ligugé
Exceptional Chateaus & Castles
Our history
Founded in the 4th century by Saint Martin of Tours, Ligugé Abbey is considered the oldest abbey in the West still in operation. This important spiritual site, marked by more than sixteen centuries of prayer and monastic life, embodies a living link between past and present.
The site preserves a 7th-century Merovingian basilica, as well as elements of religious architecture dating from the 11th, 14th, and 15th centuries. Among its heritage treasures, the Ursini tombstone, also dating from the 7th century, is particularly noteworthy.
The liturgy is celebrated there with solemnity by the Benedictine Fathers, in the pure Gregorian tradition, offering visitors a profoundly spiritual experience. The abbey is also renowned for its artisanal production of enamels, perpetuating exceptional craftsmanship in the service of sacred art.
