Exceptional Chateaus & Castles

Our history

At the foot of the hill on which present-day Lescar is built lay Beneharnum, an important Roman city. It gave its name to Béarn and became its capital. Around 850, the Saracens destroyed it. A new city was founded on the hill and, in 980, received the name Lescar. Its cathedral, listed as a historical monument in 1840, saw its construction begin in 1125 and was completed and dedicated to Our Lady in 1145. The apse is one of the most beautiful in Southwest France, and its mosaics have been studied worldwide.
