La Baume Castle
Exceptional Chateaus & Castles
Our history
Their old fortified castle having been dismantled following the Wars of Religion, the Lords of Peyre, who ruled over most of northern Gévaudan, decided to transfer the seat of their barony to La Baume. In 1630, Antoine de Grolée had a residence built on this site, which no longer resembled a fortress, but whose thick walls of local granite still gave it a very defensive character. At the end of the 17th century, his son had the château decorated by local artisans. In 1710, expansion work was undertaken. Visitors will notice the contrast between the rustic style of the 17th century and the exuberance of the 18th century, which earned it the title of the Versailles of Gévaudan .
