Our history

Within the National Archives' historical center, the Museum of the History of France is housed in one of the most beautiful and largest mansions in the Marais district, the Palais Soubise . Built by Delamair starting in 1705 and decorated by Germain Boffrand, it retains a rich interior décor and some of the finest Rococo pieces. The gilded paneling, sculpted medallions, and painted panels are the work of leading 18th-century artists such as Boucher, Van Loo, Natoire, and Restout. Temporary exhibitions on historical themes showcase some of the major documents from the National Archives. The Hôtel de Soubise does not host private events.
