Hôtel-Dieu de Tonnerre
Exceptional Chateaus & Castles
Our history
Founded in 1293 by Marguerite of Burgundy, sister-in-law of King Saint Louis, the Hôtel-Dieu of Tonnerre is one of the oldest hospital establishments from the Middle Ages still visible in France.
A visit to this site immerses you in the history and architecture of medieval hospitals, with an impressive timber frame, a gnomon (astronomical instrument), the mausoleum of the Marquis de Louvois, the tomb of Marguerite de Bourgogne and a remarkable 15th-century Entombment of Christ, considered one of the artistic treasures of Burgundy.
The museum, housed in 17th-century buildings, offers a rich collection:
-
The Hall of Charters
-
Two rooms of religious art
-
Two polychrome wooden statues from the 13th century
-
A 20th-century operating theater
-
A period room dating from 1850
A must-see site for enthusiasts of history, sacred art and hospital heritage.
