City of Graulhet
Exceptional Chateaus & Castles
Our history
Perched on a rocky islet between the Dadou River and the Verdaussou stream, Graulhet has a long and rich history to tell, as evidenced by its wealth of archaeological discoveries. During the golden age of woad, in the land of plenty, with its small woad transit port , Graulhet was an important center for the cultivation and trade of woad. Graulhet boasts a very rich and varied medieval heritage: places of worship (Romanesque churches), noble houses, ramparts, a bridge—several buildings date back to the Middle Ages. One such example is the Hostellerie du Lion d'Or , a heritage treasure of the town, listed as a Historical Monument. This half-timbered building was acquired by the municipality. A former inn, where Henry of Navarre once dined , it is an exceptional example of urban architecture using timber framing and wattle and daub.
