Fort Liberia
Exceptional Chateaus & Castles
Our history
Fort Libéria, perched above the medieval town of Villefranche-de-Conflent, was built by Vauban in 1681 to strengthen the strategic defense of this Pyrenean stronghold. Its fortification system was perfected under Napoleon III, who transformed it into a military work of rare complexity, incorporating ramparts, bastions, a counterscarp gallery, a chapel, and even an archaeological and speleological museum.
But one of its most remarkable features remains its impressive underground passage with 734 steps, directly connecting the fort to the town below. This passage, carved into the rock, offers a spectacular and unique experience. Fort Liberia's history is also marked by its use as a women's prison: several notorious poisoners were chained there, giving the place an austere and mysterious aura. A must-see for military history enthusiasts and lovers of breathtaking views.
